Artist
John Coles, a skilled painter in the area of murals, decorative
painting and watercolors, has mastered techniques to enhance
problematic spaces. "I have found that a mural can unify
a room with an odd shape or mismatched windows and
doors. Even a rough or cracked wall can be used to your advantage.
A trompe l'oeil window with a view is an easy solution for
a wall where no real window could be installed" says
John. He transformed a four-story brick wall at the Carlyle
Hotel in New York into a vista of trellises and hanging plants.
He has painted Italian country scenes in wine cellars. The
walls of a windowless building lobby became french doors leading
to a large garden. "It is only limited by your imagination,"
he says.
Experienced in commercial and residential
projects, John Coles has an extensive portfolio. Clients have
included hotels, banks, restaurants, office lobbies and private
residences across the country. A sampling of his work can
be seen in the Forbes Museum, the Four Seasons Hotel and the
Massachusetts General Hospital. John has also been featured
in Colonial Homes, This Old House showhouse and The New Yankee
Workshop.
John studied drawing and painting in Florence,
Italy and is constantly broadening his skills. Of late, he
has studied Venetian plastering and gold-leafing. "I
see every project as a new opportunity" says John.
He lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with
his wife, two children and assorted pets.
